How Close Are We to Immortality?

PICTURE A SOCIETY WHERE 66 IS THE NEW 16. WHERE YOUR LIFESPAN IS DOUBLE, EVEN TRIPLE
WHAT IT IS NOW. A WORLD WHERE YOU COULD WATCH SCIENCE FICTION BECOME REALITY, WHERE YOUR BODY WILL NEVER FAIL YOU…. A WORLD WHERE AGE IS REALLY JUST A NUMBER. LABS ALL OVER THE WORLD ARE WORKING TO GET
TO THE BOTTOM OF LONGEVITY, UNLOCKING THE SECRETS TO EXTENDING OUR LIFESPANS WELL INTO
OUR 100S… AND BEYOND. – I think it’s the greatest unsolved problem
in biology. SO, HOW CLOSE ARE WE TO IMMORTALITY? OKAY, SO, BY DEFINITION, IMMORTALITY MEANS
LIVING FOREVER, AS IN – TO INFINITY. AND MATHEMATICALLY, YOU NEVER GET ANY CLOSER
TO INFINITY THAN WHEN YOU STARTED. SO LET’S JUST GIVE UP ON TECHNICALITIES
AND START WITH WHERE WE’RE AT TODAY. THE GLOBAL LIFE EXPECTANCY IS CURRENTLY HOVERING SOMEWHERE AROUND 72 YEARS. IT’S LONGER FOR WOMEN, SHORTER FOR MEN,
HIGHER IN DEVELOPED COUNTRIES, AND LOWER IN IMPOVERISHED NATIONS WITH POOR SANITATION,
DIETS, AND ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE. THIS ALL MAY SEEM LIKE COMMON SENSE SO FAR,
BUT IT’S ACTUALLY PRETTY STRIKING WHEN YOU CONSIDER HOW QUICKLY THINGS HAVE CHANGED. – That’s the crowning achievement of modern
civilization: the fact that there are fewer and fewer people in this graveyard. Up until a couple of hundred years ago, life
expectancy was about 30 in most populations. But then, starting around 1840, life expectancy
started to go up, and it gradually rose. And today life expectancy in the country doing
the best, is 87 years for Japanese women. AND THANKS TO ACCELERATING MEDICAL, TECHNOLOGICAL, AND ECONOMIC PROGRESS, EXPERTS THINK THAT TREND WILL CONTINUE. PLUS, IN OUR ERA OF GLOBAL INFORMATION SHARING,
IT’S MUCH EASIER TO GET THE WORD OUT ABOUT BASIC LONGEVITY HACKS. So, don’t smoke. Don’t drink too much, get exercise, get fresh
air, eat a good diet, have friends. Live in a good environment with healthy air, clean water,
where you can get good medical care. WAIT, SO THE SECRET TO IMMORTALITY IS DIET
AND EXERCISE? THAT CAN’T BE RIGHT, CAN IT? SOME EXPERTS ARGUE THAT THOSE ARE REALLY
ALL THE TOOLS WE HAVE, AS WE SEEM TO BE EDGING CLOSER TO THE MAXIMUM POSSIBLE LENGTH OF A
HUMAN LIFESPAN. But I don’t think the evidence for that is
strong. – That just means a healthy diet is only going
to get you so far. SO SCIENTISTS ARE LOOKING TO THE NATURAL WORLD FOR CLUES ON HOW TO SIDESTEP GROWING OLD. SOME EVEN THINK THAT MANY OF THE AILMENTS
WE CALL DISEASES COULD BE THOUGHT OF AS SYMPTOMS OF THE MOST POWERFUL DISEASE OF ALL – AGING. – In fact, for some species, death rates actually
go down with age. So, instead of getting sicker and sicker as
you get older, you get healthier and healthier. They tend to be species that keep on growing. And as they grow they get bigger, they get
new tissue, so they restore their health. – There are whales that live hundreds of years,
and they’re very similar to us genetically, but we do need to be able to either change
our genomes or find medicines and other ways to enhance our systems so that we have the
same kind of lifespans that they do. TO DO THAT, WE’D HAVE TO STALL OR REVERSE
THE PROCESS OF CELL AGING, CALLED SENESCENCE. OVER TIME, CELLS LOSE THEIR ABILITY TO REPLICATE
AND FUNCTION PROPERLY. BUT THE PROBLEM IS WE REALLY DON’T KNOW
THE WHOLE STORY OF WHAT DRIVES SENESCENCE. WE DO KNOW THAT IT MIGHT BE SLOWED BY INTERMITTENT FASTING, AND A HEALTHY DIET. SO WHAT DR. SINCLAIR IS TRYING TO DO IS REVERSE ENGINEER
THAT PROCESS ON A MOLECULAR LEVEL. We found the first molecule that activated
a group of enzymes that seem to control the benefits of being hungry and exercising. THAT MOLECULE WAS RESVERATROL, FOUND IN FOODS LIKE PEANUTS, PISTACHIOS, POMEGRANATES, CRANBERRIES, GRAPES, AND YES, RED WINE. We gave resveratrol to yeast cells, and little
nematode worms, and to mice that were on a high-fat Western or American diet. And in all those cases, the animals were healthier
and they lived longer. That was exciting because no one really had
a safe molecule that extended the lifespan of organisms. That was the first one. BUT THAT WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING. SINCE THEN, THEY’VE ADDED MORE AND MORE
MOLECULES TO THAT ARSENAL, AND TODAY THEY’RE DIGGING INTO A PARTICULARLY PROMISING ONE
KNOWN AS NICOTINAMIDE ADENINE DINUCLEOTIDE… BUT LET’S JUST CALL IT NAD. NAD IS A CO-ENZYME, OR HELPER MOLECULE, FORMED FROM VITAMIN B3, AND WE’RE JUST DISCOVERING ALL THE  WAYS IT HELPS YOUR CELLS RESET AND
REPAIR THEMSELVES. It actually is a molecule that tells the body
when it’s time to fight disease and stay healthy. As we get older, some of our tissues, they
have less and less NAD. And without NAD, we’d be dead in probably
10 seconds. BY STUDYING HOW THE BODY MAKES NAD, DR. SINCLAIR’S TEAM BELIEVES THEY MIGHT JUST
BE ABLE TO FIND A MORE DIRECT PATH TO LONGER LIFE. This molecule NMN, not to be confused with
M&M’s, is what we call a precursor to NAD. We can synthesize it. And when we give mice NMN in their drinking
water, their levels of NAD go up about 50%, and that’s when we see these remarkable health
benefits in those old mice. They can run 50% further and they’re resistant
to radiation… and if this works, we could potentially have a pill that could mimic those things. We know that they’re healthier, but will they
live longer? That’s what we’re trying to find out. MEANWHILE, OTHER BRANCHES OF MEDICAL RESEARCH ARE TACKLING SPECIFIC DISEASES OR SYMPTOMS ASSOCIATED WITH AGE, AND SOME EXCITING TECHNOLOGIES ARE ON THE HORIZON. – There’s been a lot of very promising work
in regenerating body tissue. Another very promising area is genetic manipulation,
individualized medicine…  nanotechnologies might eventually let us put lots of small
mini robots into our body that would help build bones or kill germs. Progress is being made in reducing heart disease
death rates, stroke death rates, cancer death rates, there’s some progress
being made against Alzheimer’s. BUT IF WE DO UNLOCK THE SECRETS TO ETERNAL
YOUTH, WHAT WOULD OUR WORLD LOOK LIKE? To keep yourself amused for 200 years, you’d
have to have multiple careers, you’d have to learn new things, you’d have great, great,
great, great, great grandchildren, you know. It’d be a really different life. – If we extend people’s lives by lot, what
are we going to do with all these people? Will there be enough jobs? Will there be enough money for them? My view is that if we treat aging, we’ll have
people living into their eighties and nineties in a productive, healthy way. That would save a trillion dollars a year
in the US, easily. And globally, many trillion. That’s money that can be put back into medical
research, into education, into protecting the environment. SO IN ADDITION TO CONTINUALLY IMPROVING THE
BASICS – NUTRITION, SLEEP, SOCIAL LIFE, GLOBAL ACCESS TO HEALTH CARE – WE MIGHT JUST HAVE
TO PERFECT THE RECIPE FOR THE ULTIMATE YOUTH VITAMIN, MADE OF SYNTHETIC MOLECULES THAT MIMIC YOUR BODY’S NATURAL AGE-DEFYING FUNCTIONS, AND MAYBE THROW SOME BONE-BUILDING NANO-BOTS AND GENE MAKEOVERS IN THERE FOR GOOD MEASURE. SOUNDS CASUAL. SO, HOW CLOSE ARE WE TO IMMORTALITY? A good middle of the road prediction would
be life expectancy might go up something like three months per year. So that means in four decades you live ten
years longer, and in eight decades you live 20 years longer. What current research indicates, is that young
children today, in countries with high life expectancy, most of them will probably
live past 100. Their grandchildren and their great grandchildren
might live well into their 100s. – Can we be immortal? I don’t know of a reason physically why we
cannot, but I don’t know of any technology right now that would allow us to. The longer you live, the more technology you
have. Already we see age reversal in some experiments.
So by the end of this century, I think it’ll be commonplace to be able to reverse many
parts of aging, if not the entire thing. Like science? Want more science… forever? You can help make this channel immortal by subscribing to Seeker. Let us know what you think in the comments below, and we’ll see you next time. Thanks for watching!

  1. Spoiler alert… the answer is: closer every day! Authors of this brand new study ACCIDENTALLY discovered that a cocktail of diabetes medication, growth hormones, and hormone supplements may hold clues about reversing biological age.

  2. Well let's assume you don't. Immortality could be used to torture individuals until the end of time. So take you're over-rated textbook hero brain and stop toying with the universe

  3. When u learn to divide and know ur soul and learn not to carry but wards if u can u all ready there even down to spouse for u carry in your temple 2 o

  4. How does allowing people to live more productively until their 80s save trillions? Does this not just delay the aging process, rather than get rid of it?

  5. I can see all the progress in these fields being made. But there is no current promising technology to end cancer once and for all. Even with most modern immunotherapy and target therapy, we don't stand a chance against cancers like Glioblastoma or pancreatic cancer. The problem is, even if we find reliable solutions for those, damage to the genome will just accumulated over time as we reach our hundreds and our bodies will become more and more a mass of heterogeneous mutant cells leading to uncountable origins of cancer. If we don't end the process of cancerogenesis I don't see a chance for us achieving biological immortality.

  6. Uploading the consciousness into a computer is the best option in my opinion. No diseases, no need to oxygen, multiple sources of energy rather than just food. So many benefits.

  7. I hate it when plasticifed bitches gonna use with money like kartrashian can you imagine watching them and world another 100 years just bunch of plastic fantastic yuuuck

  8. Even if those don’t work scientists have developed a quantum computer which reversed time on itself(for a fraction of a second). Once we figure out how to use and perfect quantum computers we can play things like battlefield on 8000fps and stay relatively the same age forever.

  9. A very ambitious idea, but even if they managed to create it, it won't be accessible to everyone. As it will be reserved for politicians and leaders or so I think.

  10. If successfully the was a medicine that could make you immortal, then they should make it so that immortals can’t have babies or anything that a mortal must have.

  11. No point in a longer life if there is no purpose in life, so instead of just increasing our life spans, why not focus on giving purpose to life instead of just working people to death.

  12. halting ageing would be nice, immortality would get boring, ignorance and discovery is bliss. Our ego will end, another will begin, and this is probably the best way for the consciousness of the universe to entertain itself (us)

  13. It is so much more complex than what was presented. There are around seven different major factors to be dealt with, telomerase being one of them which wasn't even mentioned.

  14. I think if extending life say to an average age of 200 would just slow down the birth rate to match expectations of education, travel, and work.

  15. Think about this. The only difference between the words
Immortality and immorality is the T.
Or the cross. Jesus said eternal life is to know the Father.
    Something to think about.

  16. If current technological advancements continue we should achieve it. However, what if the global policy is that you can only do it if you can only have 1 child or none whatsoever, would you still do it?

  17. Have none of you researched NEUROLinks!? What Elon musk, the most innovative man in history is working to achieve!? 20-50 years from now we will most likely be a human/robot hybrid! So immortality will most likely occur through Biomechanics in all honesty.

  18. I feel like nobody has pondered the simple fact that we aren't designed to live that long mentally. Can you imagine how absolutely boring it will be? How tired we will be with eternal life? It's not practical for us humans. Perhaps practical for beings we create to deal with immortality from the ground up. We are meant to die.

  19. Almost no progress has been made from Kurzgesagt's 2017 immortality video to now. This video and the Kurzgesagt's are telling the exact same things. If everyone took this seriously, immortality would start being available in probably a week. Start having human trials because it's the humans that are trying to be immortal, not mice.

  20. So I got clickbaited by the word IMMORTALITY,
but you seriously seem to have confused "immortality" with "longevity". Diet and exercise is great for longevity, but immortality is a totally different pill to swallow (pun intended).

  21. My crystal ball might be a bit cloudy here, but it clearly shows that it's not as easy as "a healthy diet". 😉 Slowing down telomere shortening seems a bit more promising. …

  22. First we live healthier longer
    Then we reverse aging
After that we be able to scan the human brain and upload our minds to the cloud
And that's when the future starts to unfold
    I'm so excited!!!!

  23. 😑😑please don't end up making zombies and
I don't want to live forever i want to live clean and clear envorenment till i live in this planet make environment clean.😳😳😳

  24. Why does David Sinclair keep vouching for NMN as a precursor for NAD, when NR has been more researched and found to be more easily absorbed and converted to NAD, as opposed to NMN. Not only is NR more bioavailable, it’s also cheaper than NMN.

  25. They spent so much wondering if they could, that they never stopped to ask if they should. Living longer does not mean living better, and even if we did crack the secret to living for 100+ years, we already see issues with overpopulation and overcrowding.

  26. If all the money humans are spending on wars would be put into this and health, in general, we already would live for hundreds of years at least.

  27. So long as tyrants die liberty shall return to the people.
Charlie Chaplin in the great dictator.

If this technology is not made open source and becomes only a question of disposable income we could be looking at immortal oligarchs. A cure to aging doesn’t do you any good if you can’t afford it. We need better, decentralized government before this technology gets out of hand.

And don’t forget you still have clement change reason temperatures by 10° within the next 15 years. That means widespread famine, increased disease, and whether that looks like something out of a science-fiction movie.

  28. I've never heard anyone express concern about there not being enough money for the growing population of the future before. Isn't that kind of like worrying that as we build all the houses for people to live in, we're going to run out of feet and inches?

  29. Death has never scared me. Not even a bit. I find it so strange that people are afraid of it. Death is the same feeling you were feeling when you were not born yet. Don't remember it? Exactly.
I don't really care much about living forever, being an immortal.
One thing that absolutely terrifies and depresses me is AGING. I'm in my mid 30s now and I finally start to look AND feel the age. This is the scariest thing for me and I'd sell my soul and everything I have just to NOT age till like 70, or 60 and then die. I'd rather live a short life and be healthy, energetic and productive than live centuries as a vegetable.

  30. Much of the increase in "average lifespan" over the last hundred or so years has been due to the elimination (or huge reduction) of death from childhood diseases. So the numbers are misleading. It was not uncommon in the early 20th century for many children to die before puberty. Having survived childhood, lifespan was just marginally worse than it is now. Might I add living to 95 with Alzheimers disease or in a nursing home unable to take care of ones self is more and more common. Extending life is great, extending death not so much.

  31. For all have sinned and fall short of gods glory but God demonstrates his own love toward us in while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. Be not Decieved the sin of Humanity has plagued this world with destruction, despair Hopelessness commendation death. No human work or technology can ever change that. Only faith in our lord Jesus Christ and you can live forever Amen

  32. Theoretically could the medicine help cover up scaring and sunspots 🤔if that’s the case I would like to offer up my self to see if it can help re color my skin from acne scaring

  33. wouldn't it be easier just to go inside a box with photons and a high powered electric field that would burn off our skin and bones entangling our particles.

  34. Commendable optimism. Now please look outside your lab’s window. How on earth can you think that it would end well in the world as it currently is? Do you want immortal Trump, Bolsonaro, Xi Jinping? Cause that’s the kind of people who will get to it first and trying to think otherwise is just pure naïveté. But now this is probably the kind of people investing in such research already the most any way.

  35. As much as I like science, I do know that God is real because I personally met him. I just wonder how he feels about this. Scientists can try to eliminate death but it's all in vain. You will die regardless.

  36. "we could have a pill that would stop aging" yeah, and disrupt a billion-dollar healthcare industry, good luck with that…then you have an issue of overpopulation…so no, we will never stop aging, economically it's not good.

  37. So when achieved, what happens to population control???
That is gonna be a problem…so even if they achieve it i'm sure they'll keep it a secret

  38. A few of us, a subculture.. have already began to increase are Lifespan around and a little over 90% you guys will probly catch on in another 10 years…we found the formula that greatly increases Stem Cells and extends telomeres…dont ask me for the secret unless your first willing to Paypal me $200💥

  39. Only the rich will be able to prolong their lives. The Queen of England knows the secret of long life. Some say she eats baby's but a more believable theory would have something to do with the food she eats. genetics or something might play a role too.
